Recently, I had the opportunity to meet several B. Tech/MBA freshers while hiring for a marketing intern role. It was an enriching experience, as each interaction brought unique perspectives and potential.

One of my juniors asked me what qualities I prioritize in freshers, especially when they don’t have prior marketing experience. Here’s what I shared based on my own hiring philosophy:

1. A Basic Understanding of Marketing

Even if they’re freshers, I expect candidates to have a basic understanding of what marketing is. This doesn’t mean they need to be experts, but they should have a foundational grasp of concepts, trends, and tools. It shows that they’ve taken the time to explore the field they’re stepping into.

2. Clarity About Their Goals

Most of the time, freshers are just looking for a job and are unsure if marketing, coding, or sales is the right fit for them. I try to identify candidates who have taken some time to think about their interests or are at least open to exploring where their strengths lie. This clarity not only helps them grow but also allows me to guide them effectively during their internship.

3. A Problem-Solving Attitude

In marketing, challenges are inevitable. I value candidates who display a problem-solving mindset—those who see obstacles as opportunities to learn and grow. This attitude often outweighs technical knowledge in the early stages of their career.

4. Project Work and Their Role in It

For me, a candidate’s project work is a window into their skills and creativity. I like to understand the specific role they played in their projects. Were they team players? Did they take initiative? This insight helps me gauge their practical experience and approach to collaborative efforts.

5. Honesty in Their Statements

Lastly, genuineness matters a lot. I value candidates who present their CV with honesty and confidence. It’s easy to spot when someone exaggerates their achievements, and it’s refreshing to see individuals who take pride in their true accomplishments, no matter how big or small.

Through this process, I’ve realized that hiring freshers is as much about potential as it is about attitude. These interactions remind me why I enjoy mentoring young talent—it’s about fostering growth and seeing them evolve into professionals ready to make a mark.
